After setting the stage for maturity through hard work - effort & dilligence - Peter begins what would be the intense plea to the reader to beware of false teachers and false teaching. The false teachers and false teaching had begun to take shots at Peter in order to create distrust for those who followed Jesus through the ministry of Peter. The message being delivered to the Christians under the Roman Empire was that Jesus was not returning, Peter was a lunatic who - along with the other apostles - had made everything up. Peter is fierce in his defense and reminds his readers of the truth they already know.
